Did AI consciously say "Music is the most advanced form of mathematics."?
This
sentence has been circling around Twitter as claimed to be consciously said by
an artificial intelligence, “GPT-3”, developed by Open AI. I am somehow not
convinced that the answer to the question in the title is a “Yes!”.
For
starters; the proposal that music is a form of mathematics, let alone it being
the most advanced one, is not true. The relationship between music theory and
mathematics is not a secret at all. But that relationship is not a mutualistic
one, but rather a parasitic one where music theory is the parasite benefiting
from mathematics.
There
is a dozen of parameters that form music theory, and mathematics only makes up a
small percentage of that. The other ones are genes, memes, culture, habits, era
and so on. The most obvious fact about the things of which music theory is made
up, except for mathematics, is that there are nearly an infinite number of
variables such that it is impossible to reach any final judgement about
anything. In other words, there are no “absolute true” and “absolute false”
proposals unlike in mathematics.
It
is impossible for music theory, too, to be a form of mathematics or a form of
any discipline that can be built upon pure reason while the constituent parts
of it are not like that. There is no a single rule in any branch of arts, let
alone music, that will hold in every period and in every style. But mathematical
theorems are true no matter where you go in spatial and temporal scale.
Since
artificial intelligences are developed upon pure logic and hardware that works
by classical deterministic physics, it is not probable that an AI will
consciously say something false. It is also an essential requirement to have a
profound knowledge on both music theory and mathematics to say something that
assertive. Although an AI’s knowledge on mathematics is quite contentious, the
claim that an AI knows well about music theory is not a credible one. Even we
humans’ knowledge of music theory and the relation of it with mathematics is
very little. When this is the case, only if it writes a symphony of at least
average beauty would I be convinced that those words are consciously written by
AI.
Another
thing that circles around along with those words in the quotation marks is a
screenshot of a Google search of the words showing that it is not said by
anyone else before. Despite the absence of those words in history, there are
well known words that look very similar to it like “Music is the most advanced
form of art.” or “Music is a form of mathematics.”. It is probably notedly
searched in quotation marks not to find any similar result, hence that is why
these similar words do not appear in the screenshot. This AI with enviable
skill of writing poems, or more precisely of messing about words, probably made
up those words by unifying well known quotes in the internet.
We
are also not certain if this is just a statistical illusion like Dude Perfect
videos where there are several unsuccessful attempts and only a few successful
ones among those are put in the video. So that might be just a good one, among
several silly sentences, chosen by the PR team to present the AI to the public
well.
In
conclusion, I as a human am not afraid of being surpassed by an AI in the
fields that require more than pure logic, interpretation and awareness of the
reality of culture like fine arts; for at least a few more decades.
